SANTORUM TO PUERTO RICO: Speak English To Be A State

(Source Reuters):
If Puerto Rico wants to become a state, it needs to speak english, according to Rick Santorum.
The candidate was in the U.S. territory campaigning for more delegates in his race against, front
runner Mitt Romney. He was interviewed by El Vocero, a local newspaper, in which he supported
the indigenous right to self determination. His support for statehood however was conditional.
He could not support a state in which English was not the primary language. "English has to be
the principal language. There are other states with more than one language such as
Hawaii but to be a state of the United States, English has to be the principal
language".
In reality, the U.S. constitution does not designate an official language. Santorum's
words, will likely draw criticism from those within the GOP desirous of an improved
relationship with the Hispanic community. There has been no shortage of harsh words and
controversial policies, effecting Hispanics in general. Santorum's words will likely not help
improve the GOP's relationship with the latino community.
